Project 1: Media Autobiography

The development of new and different media technologies led to many changes in the way that people received media, interpreted media, and shared it. In my media autobiography I specifically focused on my personal experience with various music platforms and the changes I noticed both personally and socially. This can be tied to what Manovich has written about the consequences of new media. Manovich listed automation as one of those consequences, supporting the idea that in my personal experience, I began to interact with machines more than I did with people for convenience. Chris Anderson and Michael Wolff explain in “The Web Is Dead. Long Live the Internet” that nowadays we pay for convenience and reliability. To find new music, my friends and I could have burned CDs for each other, however, we were willing to pay 99 cents for a song rather than have to go through that less convenient process. This transition shows that as a culture we are more prone to use things out of convenience and proximity. Adapting to meet these needs, new technologies and media platforms have developed to allow people to share and connect with others more easily.
