Project 3: Digital Intervention

NYC is NYU 2031- Presentation

Reflection

Project 3: Digital Intervention

By staging a digital intervention, NYC is NYU aimed to change peoples’ view on the controversial construction project. The campaign was designed to sarcastically identify the flaws throughout the proposed project, and to spread them using social media sites. The movie “The Yes Men” follows a group as they gain worldwide notoriety for impersonating the World Trade Organization - the organization that they politically oppose. By staging an intervention using satire, the Yes Men are able to exaggerate their point and force people to re-evaluate their beliefs. They try to get people to think more deeply about what they are involved in and supporting and what the organization really represents. Internet memes were used as a tool in this project to humorously show the negative effects of the NYU 2031 plan. We chose to use this format to convey our message because of the increasingly dominant trend of users wanting faster and more efficient news and entertainment. In Chris Anderson and Michael Wolff’s essay, “The Web Is Dead. Long Live the Internet,” Anderson explains how people are gravitating away form the Internet and towards apps, which will quickly and efficiently deliver content. This method of content delivery makes up the majority of the Internet use; showing that quick and to-the-point messages are the ones most likely to be acknowledged and to recirculate.
